Recovery
The
third year in a row that the weather of the June long weekend
has not been good for going out, mid winter, cold, wet and windy.
Maybe the Marrickville venue would turn guys to other things?
As if! They packed in as usual, proving yet again that a central
venue is not an issue when it comes to having a successful party.
The space was an art gallery and so was huge yet filling it turned
out to be no problem at all. Our thanks to Michael the owner
who packed away all the hanging art works in the gallery prior
to the party and to Brett for finding the venue and making it
all happen. The challenge and expense was cleaning it afterwards
as the whole space was carpeted but Casey came in the following
day and steam cleaned the carpet.
We
need to thank Shane S and David Heaps, without whom the party
would not have happened. Also Shane G, Shaun, Greg, Tony N and
Paul. Jim and David manned the door and Dominic updated the data
base on the spot with his laptop and on the rare occasion that
we ever have a medical issue Dominic is there to provide essential
assistance. Ky not only manned the door but also helped David
M with the bags. Reymon and Shawn were great again at the bar. Bill
and George, Shane S, Chi Kan and Matthew, Peter and Bob N assisted
with the clean up. Phillip as always took the time to deliver
the wet towels to the laundry and also pick them up.

Statistics
M.E.N.
is changing. Ten years ago the proportion of regulars to guests
was 65% to 35%, with around a third of the party being first timers,
guys invited along by those who were already on the mailing list.
At the last party this had changed to 19% showing that we maintain
an increasing core of guys who regularly come to the parties yet
those guys are not inviting as many new comers as a few years back.
The numbers attending each event has remained constantly strong
in spite of the variety of competing events on during big party
weekends.
Now
we can theorise about possible reasons for this. Perhaps one
is the increasing proportion of guys who choose to receive their
invitation through email and SMS rather than hard copy. This
means that there are fewer cards out there to pass on to others.
A regular source of new comers was often the Sleaze dance floor. As
many opt for one of the Sunday parties AFTER MEN that source may
be less popular. Of course new people will not come to the
party of no-one invites them. Perhaps guys are becoming less used
to community group and more commercial and no longer realise that
we all need to contribute to making the party a success. The range
of good looking guys who look after themselves and who are sexually
open and friendly will only be there is they are asked.
The strength of M.E.N and one of the reasons it has survived so
long is its ability to renew. The model we have used is very democratic
in that anyone on the mailing list has invitation rights and can
bring along one guest or several. Unlike other parties which have
a particular type in mind, the M.E.N result is a party with men
that the party wants to play with not one that the organisers want
to play with. So there is diversity. Also MEN is not like some
sex parties organised on line where it is BYO everything (even
your own condoms and towel for chrissakes), where the invitation
list has the race, age and type of the organisers preference; parties
which which serve a short term purpose. But are usually pretty
short lived.
